Its Gaelic name is Schytherbolle, which means “a place of peace” or “fairyland.” From its construction up to the year 1545, it has been the official residence of bishops. The Castle was well maintained but in 1745 when there was a revolt, the place was turned over to different owners until a man with vision for excellence and grandeur leased the place for a year in 1897. Two years after, Andrew Carnegie purchased it from the owners for an amount of 85,000 pounds.

The new owner spent around 2 million pounds to renovate the Castle and turn it to an exclusive luxurious private members only club. A membership will cost around 23,000 pounds. Before 2008, it was open to non-members but only for one night accommodation. Today, the Castle is for the exclusive use of the Carnegie Club members.
